The New Mazda BT-50 Has Arrived, So What Can We Expect?

There is a fine balance between the bold looks of a bakkie and the authentic quality that Kodo design brings to Mazda passenger cars and bakkies. Mazda Kodo design is all about lines of movement and flow, a single unending brushstroke. This design converts the front end’s substantial presence into a look of bold, pure movement that runs across the whole body. We will have three basic models to choose from, in the form of Active, Dynamic, and Individual grades. The Active is powered by a new 1,9-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 110 kW and 350 N.m. The Dynamic and Individual receive a new 3,0-litre turbodiesel, which is good for 140 kW and 450 N.m. Only the Individual model is available in 4×4 guise, while the others sport a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Standard features in the new Mazda BT-50 include an MDZ Connect infotainment system and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto connectivity. The new models also ship with cruise control, LED headlights, reverse camera, parking sensors, Trailer Sway Mitigation and seven airbags. Headlights are now smaller and more rectangular, while the large grille is balanced in appearance, by four bold horizontal slats. The successful design of Mazda’s SUVs and crossovers have influenced its new bakkie.

The Mazda CX-30 is close in size to the CX-3 SUV, but it’s more modern and hugely desirable, which earned it an Editors’ Choice award. There are elements of the Mazda’s Kodo design language in the sweeping crease lines that flow from the grille to the side mirrors. In its most luxurious spec, the BT-50 features leather trim, automatic climate control and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The front seats are comfy and supportive, the steering column is reach- and rake adjustable and, to Mazda’s credit, the finishes feel substantial and the controls well-weighted. This comes after plans to bring the car to the local market in the first quarter of 2020 fell through following the COVID-19 pandemic. The CX-30 range consists of three derivatives, Active, Dynamic, and Individual which are all offered in front-wheel drive and automatic transmission configurations. Every variant in the line-up will be powered by Mazda’s 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine, which produces a peak output of 121kW and 213Nm. The CX-30 offers more legroom and boot space than the CX-3 but still has a very sleek/compact SUV appearance.
